The question under investigation

Can national estimates for water associated with U.S. golf facilities and U.S. data centers support a fair, useful comparison—and if so, at what scope?

Why the metrics are difficult

The current golf source reports projected applied irrigation water. The data-center source models direct operational water consumption. Application and consumption are different water-flow measures, and one cannot be silently substituted for the other.

Different years and different methods

• Golf source under review: 2024 operating data, extrapolated from a national survey.
• Data-center source under review: modeled national direct operational consumption for 2023.
• The estimates use different methods, uncertainty structures, and source boundaries.

National totals do not determine local impact

A national comparison cannot establish whether a specific facility, watershed, utility, or community is unharmed or harmed. Local conclusions require local evidence about water source, scarcity, seasonality, infrastructure, reuse, clustering, and community context.

The project is reviewing national reports from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, supported by source-version, citation, calculation, and methodology records.

BasisMark is reviewing whether the source metrics, years, methods, geographic scopes, and water-accounting boundaries can support a fair public comparison. Applied irrigation water must not be treated as identical to consumption, and recycled or reclaimed water must not be treated as zero impact.
